Breasts are often seen as a vital part of a feminine physique. Even if you choose to start hormone therapy, hormones alone may not give you the breast size and shape you desire. Breast augmentation surgery continues to be one of the most highly requested cosmetic procedures, including among transgender women.
During a typical procedure, breast implants are used to give you a natural, feminine look. MTF breast surgery can help you align your physical appearance with your internal gender identity.
Ideal candidates should be transgender women who are confident in their decision to have breast surgery. Many candidates also:
- Desire larger breasts
- Have a history of gender dysphoria
- Are non-smokers
- Want to feel more feminine
- Are committed to their transition
- Have realistic expectations for the procedure
You can choose to have breast surgery at any point in your transition. Some women decide to have breast surgery as a first step in their transition while others wait until the end. Everyone’s transition is unique. At Avant Aesthetics, our board certified plastic surgeons are compassionate and respectful in their approach and will help you create a custom treatment plan.
About MTF Breast Surgery
There are primarily two types of breast implants: saline and silicone. Saline implants are filled with a salt water solution while silicone implants are filled with a silicone gel. During your consultation, our board certified plastic surgeons will help you determine the type of implant, incision, and implant placement that is right for you based on your other features.
The incision is placed in a discreet location to minimize visible scarring. The implants can either be placed above or below the pectoralis major muscle. The entire procedure typically takes between one and two hours. Breast surgery is performed on an outpatient basis, so you will be able to go home the same day with help from someone you know.
You will likely need some assistance from a close friend or family member in the first few days following your surgery. Swelling and tenderness are normal side effects that will go away within a few weeks. A compression garment should be worn to keep the swelling down, and you should sleep with several pillows to keep your head and chest elevated.
Everyone heals differently, but you will likely need approximately one to two weeks off of work. You can resume light activities after a couple days but you’ll need to avoid strenuous activity for a few weeks. Our doctors will monitor your recovery and update your suggested activity levels.
Your breast implants will help you achieve a womanly chest. The size and placement of your breast implants will help you minimize masculine features for a more naturally feminine result. Many patients also report feeling better about themselves and more confident in their physical appearance. Once your physical appearance matches how you feel inside, you will be amazed at the difference it can make in your self-confidence.
If you are a transgender woman who has begun hormone therapy but are still dissatisfied with the size of your breasts, it may be time to consider breast surgery.
